On a rainy day, the beach virtually belongs to us alone, though the water is too cold for swimming.

This time of year, the prairie flowers are stunning. Laura Ingalls Wilder wrote in her diary, about her future husband, “He never brings me cultivated flowers but always the wild blossoms of field and woodland, and I think them more beautiful.”

A buck also sauntered through the grasses, but then ran across the path before us and into some deeper woods. He was too fast for our camera.
I grew up in the country, but have lived in suburban Chicago for over twenty years. I like my home, and I love my neighborhood and neighbors, but there seems to be a lack of…texture, in my world. My neighborhood consists of four different home models. I believe my model is the Heritage; there are four other Heritages on my block distinguishable only by their color and lack or presence of decorative shutters.
Within a 2-mile radius of my house are plenty of Walgreens, Targets, Applebees, Olive Gardens, Wal-Marts, and McDonalds. Everything is new. Everything is homogenized, generic. I long for individuality and diversity – in thought, behavior, and scenery. That is why this week in the country has been such a feast of the senses. Enjoy with me.
